Home Decorating on a Pretty Low Budget?
I have a bit of a 'thing' for older items. I have alot of brass vases, I love collecting candle holders, I adore the pictures by Waterhouse, brass beds, drapes not curtains that gently sweep the floor. Frames of our family, in contradiction, in black frames with the white inserts which give the impression of the picture either deeper or standing out of the frame, completely comfy lounges that arn't big and bulky. Furnishings which need to be child friendly/proof...lol...
Childrens rooms. Girls, one who likes pink and princesses the other who leans slightly more in the direction of the gothic side. Boys, one who loves AFL, cricket and now golf. The other Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and small toys requiring imagination.
Finally, we live in a Housing Trust/Public Housing home but have pretty much free reign, we also have a limited budget.
Where would I begin? Any and all ideas: websites, stores, mags etc. Let me know please. I haven't a clue! lol
Thankyou everyone. =)
I appreciate all the answers I've been given so far, there are some good ideas in there. What I'm mostly interested in though is where to begin looking for colour schemes, the sort of thing that will work well in a small home and with the type of things that I like, described (sort of...lol...) in the orginal question.
I'm a regular of op/bargin/2nd hand shops. We technically own two pieces of actual furniture that are new and three electronic/whitegood's that are new. Everything else, pretty much 2nd hand. :) lol I would rather go for newer things though as for once we'll actually have the money to do so. 2nd hand was has mostly always been our only option, not AN option unfortunately. I will be looking around at the 2nd hand stores still though. I love them. lol
Thanks again everyone, I've been going through the sites that have been mentioned and righting a ton of stuff down!

The best place to find things real cheap is at garage sales, on ebay, or craigslist. Craigslist works better than EBAY because the sellers are local and you won't have to pay any shipping costs.
If you are looking for decorating ideas, go to a store like Pottery Barn or IKEA and buy one thing. That way you will be on the mailing list and you will have catalogs sent to you to get ideas from.

Decorating Kids rooms on a limited budget.?
I am decorating 2 rooms. One is for a 7 year old girl and one for an 11 year old boy. The girl likes Bratz, Hanna Montana, Barbie, and Disney princess'es. The boy likes wrestling. I have a very limited budget and there rooms are VERY large at 17' by 17'.
I have furniture for both rooms and some accessories. My biggest problem is what to put on the walls. They have a lot of wall space and no picture seems big enough. I was thinking of doing a mural on one of her walls, but what about him? He is very picky.
We are doing this as a suprise so we can't ask them. We are doing it that way becuase we think it will end up being cheaper.
Please any tips on decorating cheap will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time!
Thank you I have already been to the opps paint a hundred times. I have lots of colors for her room. Nothing for him! Hes the hard one.

Check on freecycle or thrift stores to try and find a wrestling mat.
If he likes 'professional' wrestling try to find some thick rope and hang it with swags down one wall - like an wrestling ring would have ropes.
A wrestler might work out with some weights - so again check freecycle for weights and a weight bench.
See if you can find 4 posters of wrestlers and hang them in a straight line down one wall. Next see if you can have a picture of your son blown up to poster size with lettering added saying something like (Sons Name vs Godzilla tonite 9:00pm. Tickets on sale now!)
Use the colors from the mat as accent colors throughout the room. If you can get a set of lockers they would provide great storage for all his gear.

For the girl don't worry about building a theme based on Bratz or Hanna Montana, etc. Her favorites will change very fast and then all your hard work will be in vain.
Something like this: http://www.bhg.com/bhg/slideshow/slideShow.jsp?slideid=/templatedata/bhg/slideshow/data/ThemedRoomsForKids_01202004.xml&page=11
is cute and whisical and works with wathever her currect favorite is.
Or paint her walls in sherbert colors - lime, orange, & yellow. Make the two end walls the same color and the other two walls the 2 & 3 rd color. Paint all furniture white. Find a bed n a bag set in the same sherbert colors. Paint bird houses in these same 4 colors (3 sherbert & white) hang on one wall. Paint whimsical flowers etc on the same wall and then a few random ones on other walls. Be sure to paint one on the top of the wall overlapping onto the ceiling. Something like this:http://www.bhg.com/bhg/slideshow/slideShow.jsp?slideid=/templatedata/bhg/slideshow/data/ThemedRoomsForKids_01202004.xml&page=5

Bu tyou don't have to do all of it, just eh pillows and feathers and the lines indicating motion.
Hope some of this helps. Most more importantly have fun! :0

Decorating a very small house... on a budget, please help!?
Ok So my mom is looking at a very small house to rent. The rooms are very small and are painted very bright shades of pink, blue, and yellow. There is a room in the tiny basement that has blue-ish turquoise concrete floors and i'm not sure abut the walls. I would like help on how to decorate this small space without spending a lot of money??
Also, I know that buying a lot of primer to repaint the blue, pink, and yellow walls is going to cost quite a bit... Is there anything else to do? Please Help. They painted the ceilings the samse colors as the walls! The pink room also has pink carpet! Me and my sister are both in high school, so the decorating for those rooms shouldn't be very little girl like. Please Help!
Thanks

You have my deepest sympathies. If you can't afford the primer, then how about a cream glaze, you will need some cream paint and a container of glaze and they will combine to tone down the colors to something bearable. Probably two gallons of paint and a quart of glaze should cost about $55.00. Its put on with a rolled up T-shirt, check out the examples of faux painting at the store, I'm sure you will find a texture you like the look of. You will need a specific kind of concrete paint for the basement floor, about $30.
Take your newly toned down shades of pink, yellow, and blue and think romantic shabby chic for your style, that will allow you to paint any mismatched furniture creamy white and it will all work together and look like you meant it to be. It also means you can check out thrift stores and garage sales to make your home very personal, just don't buy broken junk, but think of more cream paint for lamps and things. Sheets and pillowcases can be used as drapes and Target is good for those. Good luck
