James asks…

I Have A Problem With My Mother, Help Would Be Most Welcome.?

First of all, I have on the hole a good relationship with my mother but she had to move in with me a few months ago and I have a few issues?

First of all, although she was a god mother she was never supportive of me like she was to all my siblings, she would treat my eldest half brother like a God (despite the fact he dropped out of High school, he did well for himself quickly though), she treated my elder half sister like a loving daughter that she was proud of (she did do very well) and she treated my little brother like any loving mother would she was very supportive of him (despite the fact he was an absolute trouble maker).
I have a very good relationship with all my siblings they are very proud of my success and vice verso, but my mother was never supportive for example when I was nearly 11 I taught myself guitar and piano, when I was 13 my best friend wanted me to play in his band but my mother would not let me, also when in year 9 I failed maths despite doing very well at everything the rest of my academic career she still always shot down my career ideas (when I wanted to be a scientist or doctor or detective it was, your not clever enough, or when I wanted to go in to Music it was, your not very good at it and when I wanted to go to the Welbeck Sixth Form College on an MOD Scholarship she said "you wont get in")

Another issue I had with her was her lying and disrespect of my property, she borrowed a lot of money which I worked hard for from me when I was 11 to 15 and also if I needed help with a project due in, in about 5 months she would keep putting it off even with one week to go, on the night before it was due in she said "well you did not give me very much warning (I'm quite sure twice a week for 3 months was decent warning) and the other case that bothers me the most was with my lap top, I invested a lot of time into making it perfect for me, when I bought it, it was bran new and had all my homework, literacy work, game designs on it, everything really, once she needed to use it and she completely took over it, let alone practically destroying it, she never paid for it or apologized.

Recently, she lost her teaching job in Powys and by extension her rented house, I let her stay with me for a while (in my owned house he he), but it seems she has completely disrupted my life.

First of all I on Royal Naval pay do very well for myself, I invested the money in the perfect house and decoration, which she criticized to no end while the rest of the family were very supportive of it, I before she came had a very good routine and I kept a perfect house with much ease, but she has completely disrupted my life by making a complete mess while I'm working away and refusing to clean it up, treating me like her personal valet, taking over the computer which cost me over £2000 to manufacture, she also damaged the Pc, she sleeps on the sofa affecting my routine, she complains that I don't go out enough, she won't let me invite my grand parents (on Dad's side) over even though they live so close, she repainted my once perfect kitchen, she keeps letting her boyfriends mates stay at the house (including in my bedroom), she keeps talking like it's her house, she keeps insulting my personal projects (my science room, building my hunters hide etc), she hogs the television and complains if I don't drive her long distances, worst of all though she often brings home her 5 girl friends and she talks to them as if its her house and she keeps telling them all HER plans for it (without consulting me or letting me include into the conversation), she also talks to them about how unsuccessfully I am and stupid I am (I am the exact opposite to how she perceives me)
any advice would be most wanted,
she secured herself a stable job as a substitute teacher so she pays me a little rent but very little (especially for the way she treats the house) and shes only earning about £15,000 a year so there are not many decent houses in Cardiff that cheap.

Wow - that's a tough one being your mom and all.

Sounds like you need a conversation and you need to be a little tough about it.

That the house and all the things are yours. That her taking over as if it were hers is not appropriate, right or welcome.

Staying for awhile is ok as long as she respects your things and leaves things that don't belong to her alone. But make it clear that it is YOURS. Any reference to re-doing, painting is not welcome and not appropriate.

Encourage her to get her own place as soon as possible. The longer she stays with you the easier it will be for her to think of it as her own.

And absolutely no one in your bedroom. Absolutely no boyfriends (there are more than one?).

She needs to respect you and your house and the situation she is in.

Helen asks…

I am turning 13! I am on a budget!?

Okay! So my birthday is coming up, the big 13! I want to have a halloween themed party like i did last year, but i spent a little over 150 dollars last year. I want to have around 20 people there and there are going to be girls and boys there. I want it to be a costume party. I am planning on renting out the clubhouse in my neighborhood, but i am not sure on how much that is going to cost. I want to spend the least amount of money that i can! I am going to have to buy a cake, decorations, food, and come up with games to play. Remember, it is a HALLOWEEN party! I saw some punch and food ideas in a magazine that i can make, but i am planning on making my own punch. Any ideas on food? CHEAP! I was thinking about buying a big pack of hot dogs and hamburgers at Sam's club, but if you have another idea on food please help! I will have picky eaters there so not too weird! Thanks so much! And i need all the advice i can! Oh yeah, i'm not planning on spending more than 100 dollars. This doesn't include renting a room. Thank you!

Wow you are to be commended for being 13 and paying for your own party! Your ideas sound great and the food ideas are perfect for your age group. You might also buy two big frozen pizzas - cut in small bite size pieces and serve like that - also could get wings and have various dips for them - or a big taco salad dip and chips to dip 'em in.
Have a fun birthday - and the costume idea for halloween is a good one.

Ken asks…

15th Birthday Ideas??!! I need MAJOR help!!?

I'm turning 15 in february, and have been trying to figure everything out. I know WHO i'm going to invite. and WHAT we're going to do.
It's a sleepover at my house, and i am inviting 9 girls. Plus me is 10. They are all my closest, best friends. So i'm not trying to invite random people.
I need some ideas for games, activities, and snacks too lol.
They'll be coming a little before dinner time, and staying the night.
I am not a huge fan of watching movies, but we'll probably watch one.

So my quesetions are:

What kind of games should we play? (I don't want any that involve people outside of the party, so nothing like Ding-Dong Ditch, or anything, my parents are semi-strict.)

What kind of snacks should we have? (Remember it is in february, and we are teenage girls. One of my friends is vegetarian, so keep that in mind. The meals themselves are covered. But i need some good snack ideas that everyone will like!)

What's a good movie to watch? (I prefer a comedy that will keep everyone cracking up like the WHOLE time. Some of my friends are NOT fans of Horror, and obviously a tear-jerker is gonna bring down the mood)

What kind of decorations should i have? (I was thinking just having some balloons everywhere. I have a big living room/kitchen that we'll be in the whole time. So i mean we don't need TONS of decorations, but i want it to look like a party!)

And lastly, when is an appropriate time to open presents? (I was thinking like after dinner I would open presents, and then when we finish we can have cake?)

Thanks sooo much!

Hi! #1, thanks so much for your great help with my play question :) i'm in 8th grade so yeah, middle school lol
okay so

1) games: unless you think it's childish, it's fun to play reality games like America's Next Top Model, where you have a judge and she gives photo, runway, etc challenges... Plus you can play truth or dare with calling people, if your parents are kind of strict.

2) goldfish are always good. Pretzels are kinda healthy, and popcorn too. And theres always potato chips :) plus, coke, diet coke and sprite/ginger ale

3) THE HANGOVER IS A HILARIOUS MOVIE! Otherwise... Hmmm... Maybe borat ?

4) decorations aren't really that big a deal as you get older, so maybe some humble ballons or something... Streamers hanging from the ceiling?

5) usually, at parties, what happens is we eat dinner, and while the cake gets cut / thaws if its ice cream cake, we open presents. Then eat cake, and then go up and have a crazy fun party :)

i hope i helped :)

Chris asks…

5th grade graduation party?

My little sister and her friends are graduating from the 5th grade so we are going to have a party for her 5 friends. She was thinking that the girls could come over around 2 o' clock and go swimming at our pool then later go to the arcade a play some games a rides there then come back home eat cake and watch movies. Is that a good idea?If not can you give us an idea of what we should do?It's a sleepover so should we ask our dad if he could set up a tent in the living room?
Also what food should we serve and should we have decorations?
Sorry I meant to put 6 friends
Also do you know any pranks? They want to have a last prank of 5th grade so they are dividing into teams. My sister's team will be a team of three and they need help on which pranks to do they need at least 3 pranks
Should we do a scavenger hunt when we get back from the arcade?BTW will live in a apartment so we can't exactly go knocking door to door
Sorry we are going to the arcade first then the pool
Also what movies should we rent?

Your party plan is excellent...the girls will have a great time! I don't think decorations are really needed seeing as how you're doing so many different activities and will be going from place to place>>

but you CAN do some cute "graduating" treats for the girls: like these Reese's hats (Cup-Caps) to symbolize their graduation>> you can use fruit roll-ups to make tassels and cut them thin for "fringe"...also, you can substitute peanut butter to hold the top chocolate graham cracker to the peanut butter cup>>
http://www.tasteofhome.com/Recipes/Graduation-Caps

You can also serve mini connolis tied with a licorice string in a bow around them to make edible "diplomas".

For the other foods: well, parties always seem to have pizza because that's what everyone eats..and you may want to order chicken wings along with that, and you can add any kind of salad to the menu.....additional treats can be any kind of chips, dips, Twizzlers, popcorn....Doritos, Cheetos, Skittles or M&M's.

Fruit pieces on party picks (use pineapple chunks from a can, add a grape and a maraschino cherry) and stick all the picks into half an orange on a plate.

Another fun treat is cupcakes made to look like girls at a pajama party:
http://familyfun.go.com/recipes/pajama-party-cupcake-686222/

Or you can make a cake like a 9x13 cake and decorate it to look like a camp out: green frosting with crumbled oreos crumbs for dirt..fire logs are pretzels made to stand tepee style ..add some red/yellow frosting between them for fire....design sleeping bags with graham cracker rectangles placed all around the fire and add round Necco candy for the heads--use frosting to make hair, facial features. Decorate the graham cracker bags by lining them all around with frosting of different colors. Find little fake trees to add to top of cake if you have them....or make a little garden of cutting marshmallows and making petals (sprinkle colored sugars on the petals)..group together in a corner.

OR...you can decorate the cake using graham crackers in square shape and put together to create a triange tent...decorate with frosting.....add little "feet" coming out of the tent (use long candy for legs and something else to stand up as the feet (maybe tootsie roll pieces?).

I think just having plates and cups and napkins in your graduation theme is good enough for decorations....along with the 2 suggested food theme ideas...and you can always make a banner for the girls.

As an extra bonus: find cheap t-shirts at a craft store (check online for coupons for that store, too) and hand out one to each girl with a permanent marker...this way they can all sign each other's shirts and leave their message for a memory to take home. Be sure to capture lots of pics!
