Bedroom Decor Ideas On A Budget

Photobucket

Laura asks…

I want to DESIGN my bedroom, but don't know where to start!?

My bedroom is about 500 square feet. As you walk into the bedroom, there is a huge window that faces East and a HUGE closet w/ Bi-folding doors, that faces South. I normally place my bed, which is a Queen size under the window, or between the entrance to the bedroom and the closet. I have a small dresser along with the bed. I need some ideas such as decor, but on a budget. I am not picky about styles, but I like the color purple, turquoise, very modern. HELP! :) Thanks!!!

Help! I need inexpensive decorating tips!?

I am moving into a 2 bedroom duplex this week. I am on a very tight budget, but im looking for inexpensive decor ideas! The floors are tile (brown color and they are gorgeous!) and the bedrooms are carpeted in brown. Cabinets in kitchen and bathroom are oak. All fixtures/door knobs are brushed aluminum.

Though not all trends are worth following, some are great. By incorporating at least one into your decor, you can create a fresh, updated look for your home. The key is to know how to incorporate decorating trends without wasting your time and money. Here are a few rules of thumb:

Follow one trend at a time.
There are always many decorating fashions to choose from. It is impossible to achieve all of them simultaneously without reflecting a split-personality decor. Select one or two that you like. When you limit which fashions you follow, incorporating them into your home becomes a lot easier.

Build upon your existing decor.
Definitely do not eliminate your furniture and substitute it with new furniture just because you want to go with the latest fad. By next season, your bright red modern couch could be old news. Instead, try inexpensive accessories such as pillows, picture frames, vases, plates or lamps. If you don't want to get rid of old accessories but are looking for a change, store the accessories you are temporarily replacing, because they most likely will return in the future.

Don't overdo it.
A little bit goes a long way. It is important to be cautious of how far you pursue a fashion. For example, faux animal prints have been hot for several seasons. A few inexpensive faux animal print pillows will capture that look tastefully without breaking the bank. On the other hand, a faux animal print upholstered couch, pillows and area rug are too much of a good thing. Plus, it is much easier and less expensive to invest in pillows than in reupholstering a couch.

Be creative.
Follow the easiest, most inexpensive avenue. For example, lemon yellow is an accent color in this year's new color palette. You can incorporate it by buying a bag of lemons at your grocery store. Place the lemons in a bowl and place it on your coffee or dining table. Voila!

Don't go crazy with paint.
If aquatic blue is the latest "in" color, do not paint your entire house interior in this color. Although painting is probably the most inexpensive decorating project and yields the most impact, it is time consuming. Start by painting one room or buy some pillows or a vase in the new color instead of painting everything.

Here's what's hot in the decorating world this spring:

Tropical color palette: lush leaf greens and aquatic blues with punches of bright pink and corals or lemon yellow
Chunkier, heavier, more primitive furniture
Dark wood, bamboo and whitewashed metal furniture
Tailored slipcovers
Sisal rugs
Influences from Southeast Asia, Indonesia and Africa
Brushed gold, pewter and tarnished copper
Silver is becoming more popular than gold

Daniel asks…

Redecorating my room. Ideas?

I'm going to redecorate my bedroom, but I'm on a budget. The color scheme is going to be purple and black. I really need some ideas for decor. My room is pretty small (don't know the exact measurements) so I can't put a lot of bulky furniture in it. I was thinking maybe some candles, wall appliques, what else? Ideas and links would be great. Thanks!

Oh and if it helps, I'm 15. My age might give you a better idea as to what I might like.
By the way, I'm not saying that I don't want furniture suggestions, I just can't have a ton of it. At the moment I have a single bed, a dresser, a cubby/bookshelf thing, and a night stand. The only things I intend to keep are my bed and the cubby/bookshelf which i intend to paint black. I also want to put a small vanity in my room, so that doesn't leave room for much furniture. . .Anyway, just some cute things that I could put on the walls (which will be purple) and some things I can just set around the room would be great.

As far as the furtniture goes, you can get a stain-hiding primer and oil based paint and make those over in no time!! Also, if your dresser drawers, etc. Have handles and knobs, you can go to Lowes and change them all out to match for just a few dollars each!
If the top of your dresser is too bad, you can sand it prior to painting. Also, you can visit Lowes and have a piece of glass cut to lay on top of it (also cheap) so that future abuse doesn't happen. (If you are unable to cure the existing problem, lay a piece of decorative fabric, or a collage of your favorite photos, underneath the glass.

Blue could go two ways:
1. (cheapest) Go shabby-chic. I'm sure family members would have some accessories to help you get the ball rolling. The cool thing with this design is that you get to mix old fashioned with modern. Blue is a great start-off color. (Here's a link: http://www.target.com/Simply-Shabby-Chic-Design/b?ie=UTF8&node=11075051)
2. Be inspired by the beach! Have any old sea shells stuck in your closet from a beach trip? Place them in shadow boxes with a rough-painted finish. Buy some airy, low priced, sheers and keep window treatments and bed coverings light. Fill a clear vase half-way with sand instead of water and add your favorite silk flowers.

Also, sometimes if you don't know where to start, find a great photo that has one of your room colors in it. Look at the other colors and pull from the design. The same goes for wall art, or any other major piece you can center your room design on.

Just some thoughts! Good luck! And $300 can get you there!
