Mary asks…

Where to Buy Furniture For a Baby’s Room?

My pregnant wife is on strict bed rest and she has asked me to take a stab at decorating our baby’s room. My better half has great taste and I want to surprise her with a terrific nursery. Can anyone recommend a high end store that sells baby furniture?

I would try Babies R Us...not exactly a really fancy store, but they have some very nice things and helpful salespeople...they might suggest things that you really need but don't know that you need. They have a wide variety of price ranges in the furniture too.

The basics for the baby's room are crib, dresser, changing table, and -optional-a chair with an ottoman or a rocking chair for night feedings.

You can buy the baby's bedding as a set...but you should buy three or four extra sheets also...because until you get good at changing diapers, they will leak. The comforter that comes with the crib set isn't for use in the crib until they're at least 1, but it makes a nice wall decoration and also helps absorb some sound if it's on the wall.

Read about childproofing the baby's room before you start decorating...better to have it as part of your plan than to have to go back and do it later.

Keep in mind that at first, a bassinet in your bedroom may be where your wife's most comfortable keeping the baby...I know a lot of people who've decorated a gorgeous nursery...and a year later, the baby's still sleeping in the parents' room.

I have just moved to Tokyo and am in the need for furniture for a baby room.?

We are looking for something similar to Pottery Barn in the US. Any suggestions? If someone knows a place that has Pottery Barn like furniture even for the rest of the house, please respond.

Try IKEA (but believe them when they say "some assembly required")

Toys R Us usually has a baby section with strollers, car seats, and cribs, but I think their prices tend to be high.

Also, Tokyu Hands (a department store) has some furniture, I'm not sure if they have baby furniture but it's worth checking out, there are several throughout Tokyo.

Mandy asks…

Is it bad to use particle boards furniture in baby's room?

I bought an Ikea dresser, not the baby/kids item, just the regular ikea product. Is it safe to put in the nursery? considering it is made of particle board?
do you think there are some toxic chemicals that can be harmful for the baby? the formaldehyde glue in the particle board perhaps? what do you think?

admin answers:

They're completely safe to use around babies as long as they're properly anchored to the walls.

Furniture color for babies room?

I am 12 weeks along and we are thinking about going to look at baby furniture this weekend. We have painted the room yellow because we don't know the sex of the baby yet. I know we are going to have to go with light wood or white furniture because of the color of the walls. My question is if you think it would look okay if we did white furniture for a boy? The crib set we bought is neutral so it would match, just trying to figure out if people do a white crib for a boy?

admin answers:

You could also go with a light wood like pine or oak.
