Go for very rich coloring. Gold accents- maybe even paint your walls a gold color to give it a rich feel. Textured and intricate wall paper can also be used. Crown molding along the top of your walls, baseboards along the bottom and a chair rail about 3 foot up from the floor going all the way around the room will also add an old architecture feel. If going all the way around the room is too much, you can use molding to sort of "frame" out squares or rectangles on your walls and doors.
Here's a bedroom idea:

here's an example of moldings:

Also, try to stick to dark, rich wood tones for your furniture. For pictures, use very ornate gold frames or carved wood.

Here's a carved wooden frame that is very pretty for ideas:

You could also do a search for "gesso frame" which should bring up some very ornate and expensive looking picture/ mirror frames.

Furniture of that era was very tall so, if you can't find period furniture and you still want to have the tall effect, find long mirrors and hang them vertically on the walls. You could create your own frames for the cheap $15 mirrors by going to your local home improvement stores and buying decorative moldings and having it cut down to measurements right there at the store. You would then nail and glue it all together and could also paint the moldings to your taste.

Anyway, good luck.

Helen asks…

Urban Hipster Rooms.?

I'm looking for ideas for a hipster room. I love urbanoutfitters and their wall decor, and curtains. I want some neutral yet floral designs. I'm a teenage girl so I want it to be more hipster and I want to vere away from HOT. HOT. pink walls and zebra things. But you know more neutral. Maybe a lighter pink? with floral wall paper like halfway up the wall?

Please, I'd like some ideas, and pictures could help.

^Maybe that type of curtain, and find matching bedding.

^Lamps like that

^Chairs like that, maybe you can paint one black, and leave one white.

^I know you said no hot pink, but one splash of color would look good if you got a canvas with that^

^Two pillows like that on your bed, for the same color splash.

Hope I helped, and thanks for answering mine(:

Donna asks…

How can I decorate my bedroom to offset the pastel walls?

I'm a teenage girl and I moved into my sister's old room. The problem is that the walls are painted in pastel blue and green with white, and the carpet, furniture, ceiling, door, closet, and blinds are all white. All the paleness is kind of drowning me!
It's not an option to paint anything or get new furniture, so I need to improvise by hanging things on the wall or buying myself decor items. What can I do to make the room look richer and darker in color? How can I offset the paleness of everything to make the room cozier and warmer? If I were to change one thing in my room besides the walls to make the room seem less pale, what should it be? Money is kind of short right now so it would need to be really affordable.

Is there a thrift store near you? You can get an assortment of dark pattern sheets and make a bed canopy. At thrift stores they are really cheap!
You can add some dark toss pillows and use some scatter rugs on the floor (you can place them over the carpet too)
The dark canopy will make the bed the focus of the room, and the pale walls will just help to focus the bed as the feature.
